The Omega-3 DHA Breast Milk Test is designed for women who are currently breastfeeding. 

Omega-3 DHA is an important component of a baby's developing brain, and it is present in breast milk. DHA levels in breast milk, like blood, go up and down mainly based on how much you eat.

Testing your breast milk DHA level tells you whether your baby is getting enough of this essential nutrient — and if not, gives you clear guidance on dietary or supplement changes to close the gap. Simply collect a small milk sample at home and send it to our lab for analysis.

Using specialized paper strip technology, the Omega-3 DHA Test assesses a mother’s personalized fatty acid profile to determine whether their diet contains the recommended levels of DHA necessary for the overall well-being of their baby. Having this knowledge enables the mother to adjust their diet and supplementation, if necessary, so that they can reach optimal DHA levels. This can be confirmed by re-testing of a breast milk sample after a 2-4 week period following efforts to enhance DHA levels.


DHA is well recognized as a physiologically-essential polyunsaturated fatty acid needed in sufficient amounts in the brain and retina to support optimal cognitive and visual functioning, along with other health benefits during infant growth and development. Higher levels of DHA omega-3 in breast milk and higher DHA intakes by infants have been associated with:

• Better performance in neuro-behavioural functioning amongst infants
• Improved visual acuity
• Improved hand-eye coordination
• Lower risk of bronchitis and bronchiolitis

Infants cannot efficiently produce their own DHA and must obtain it from breast milk or infant formula following birth. Breast milk naturally contains DHA; however, the amount of DHA found in breast milk can vary significantly depending on the mother’s diet.

When should I start measuring my DHA levels?


After delivering your baby, it's best to measure your breast milk DHA levels approximately 2-4 weeks following delivery. This will allow you to make the necessary changes to your diet if your DHA levels are low.

How often should I measure the DHA in my breast milk?


If your DHA levels are good after your first test and you maintain a healthy lifestyle, the one test is enough. However, if your levels are low, and you increase your intake of DHA (via fish or fish oil pills), then you can take the test as soon as two weeks after your previous test. Yes, your DHA levels in your breast milk can improve in as little as 2 weeks.

Will a premature baby have different DHA needs?


Premature infants miss out on some time for brain DHA accumulation. As such, they tend to have a greater need for DHA. Mothers of premature infants can safely increase their Milks' DHA levels by supplementing with up to 800 mg DHA per day.

Why test for DHA?


The only way to determine DHA levels in breast milk is to have it tested. DHA levels are difficult to guess. The way to determine DHA status is to test for them. Different types of fish and other food sources contain varying DHA levels. Other dietary factors can influence the amount of absorption of DHA in the body. Our lab will take a small sample of breast milk, measure its DHA level, and send a report to the Lactation Consultant indicating the DHA score. We will know where it falls and whether it is within the recommended range. Having this knowledge enables Lactation Consultants to help their breastfeeding clients adjust their diets, if necessary, so they can reach recommended DHA levels in relatively short periods of time. Confirmation involves re-testing a breast milk sample after a 2-4 week period following efforts to enhance DHA levels.
